Hailing from Flint, Michigan, Sinclair rose to prominence in the mid-1960s thanks to his unique brand of jazz poetry, typically delivered in audio format with musical accompaniment by his collaborators, the "Blues Scholars." Sinclair's artistic pursuits intertwined with his burgeoning political activism. He became the manager of the Detroit rock band MC5, whose politically charged music and counterculture audience resonated deeply with him. This period saw Sinclair's growing radicalism, culminating in his co-founding of the White Panther Party in 1968. This socialist and anti-racist group mirrored the Black Panther Party's mission. A pivotal moment arrived in 1969 when Sinclair was arrested for marijuana distribution. The ensuing ten-year prison sentence sparked outrage due to its perceived severity. This galvanized a significant protest movement (Hash Bash in Ann Arbor) fueled by prominent figures of the 1960s counterculture. Ultimately, the tide turned in Sinclair's favor. In 1972, the Michigan Supreme Court overturned his conviction, declaring the marijuana possession law unconstitutional, leading to his release.
