In this lick, I strum familiar chord shapes on the top three strings with downstrokes while using the open D string as a drone, or pedal tone, to accompany myself. A drone (typically a bass note) is a note that remains stationary while chords or melody notes are played against it. Strum each chord individually, and listen to how the open D note can add sweetness, as with the A/D chord in bar 2. As that open D note remains constant, it can also be used to build tension, as is the case with the Gm/D chord in bar 5. When performing a chord-based strumming phrase such as this one, I occasionally use what is sometimes referred to as the "all-purpose passing chord" to help me get from one chord to another. This simply means taking your fingers off the fretboard, while strumming, as you transition from one chord shape to the next. I do this at the end of bar 2 leading into bar 3, and again at the end of bar 3 into bar 4. The tempo is 124 beats per minute, 76 for slow practice.
