#BiologyOfOrthodontics In this video we introduce a new theory that explains the biology of orthodontic tooth movement. Dr. Alikhani discusses the early events in the periodontal ligament (PDL) in response to orthodontic forces. Results of CTOR research show that inflammatory markers are released in response to trauma caused by orthodontic forces, recruiting and activating Osteoclasts into both the tension and compression side of the PDL. While bone is resorbed all around the moving tooth, force application displaces the tooth in the direction of that force. This scientific evidence is very important and explains why clinicians should not recommend the use of anti-inflammatory medication during orthodontic treatment.
