On January 8, a nighttime tour was held to enjoy the floodlit Yamabiko Falls in Maruseppu in the town of Engaru in the Okhotsk region, where a huge icicle forms during the severe winter season. Approximately 50 people from the town and beyond enjoyed the magical view. The tour was held for the first time in two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The waterfall is approximately 28 meters high and 5 meters wide. It began to freeze in early December last year and became a complete icicle by the beginning of the year. Lights change the color of the waterfall from blue to yellow and the like, and a woman from Tokyo, who was participating as part of a monitor project, said, “It’s scenery you can't see in Tokyo. I was impressed by how dynamic it is.” As the roads in the vicinity are closed during the winter, the falls are inaccessible to the general public. Tours will be also held on February 12 and 19, and again on March 5.
