Starting points for the design of this garden were the wishes of the owners as well as the soul of this place. In the redevelopment, a lot of the existing vegetation was reused. The borders are islands surrounded by the flowing green of grass, forming a carefully composed, richly detailed unity of flower, berry and leaf. 26 Years ago we bought this farm with pasture, which was our starting point. We wanted to make it into a garden, its size is big enough, and so we just began. We collected beautiful things and over the years it had become a collection of "beautiful". But actually, some cohesion was missing. There was just a whole lot of chaotic beauty. And then we asked Harry Pierik, garden designer, to make a more coherent whole of all this beauty, with a more flowing shape and with things much more logically connected. That was about 10 years ago. So now we have a garden that has been growing over the last 10 years. And in those 10 years work has continued from that first design. And what we have now is a garden that has some uniformity. Frank is the one who cuts the grass, trims the hedges and maintains the garden. All the heavy, heavy work. I'm the one who maintains the borders. Maintaining the borders chiefly means that I ensure that plants do not overgrow one another. So lots of clipping and cutting. Especially in spring, I start clipping and cutting the two big borders in order to make them beautiful rising borders in the course of the season and to ensure that they do not get too high in front. I think the role of the landscape in the garden, especially in the garden, is very important. But certainly in a garden such as this, where on one side there are woods and on the other side grass, I think you should also have a transition in the garden from woodsy borders to wide stately borders. And I have the impression that has turned out really well here. We feel very at home in this place. That feeling has grown over the years. But certainly in its current form and position in relation to the surrounding landscape, the garden is a place that, in every season, evokes feelings of “things make sense” and comfort. That feeling starts very early in the year and it grows. Borders will fill up and at this time of the year, when a lot of gardens are beginning to decline, to put it that way, you will see that this garden still brings pleasure and intense experience. Which is the purpose of a garden. You should feel at home. It's a very comfortable place.
