CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A new study on JAMA Network Open is raising alarm as more teens are using electronic cigarettes. The FDA says teen e-cigarette use has jumped nearly 80 percent in the past year. Now this study found that e-cigarettes can be a bridge that leads to teenagers smoking traditional cigarettes in the future. Researchers found when someone started using e-cigarettes, the chances of smoking a regular cigarette are actually four times higher for a teen and three times higher that they will continue to use a cigarette. The study looked at more than 6,000 teenagers between the ages of 12 and 15. They were surveyed on their use of traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes and other tobacco products over time. Cleveland Clinic doctors who reviewed this study say a lot of teens may start vaping thinking e-cigarettes don't have nicotine. Many do, and nicotine is considered highly addictive. If you get hooked, you want more and that's why vaping may be the bridge to traditional smoking.
