Avoid THIS Cataract Surgery Complication | Flomax (tamsulosin) & Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome

Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome (IFIS) is a condition that can cause some pretty serious ocular complications if you don't expect it. Fortunately, these issues only arise during certain ocular surgeries and don't affect the day-to-day function of the eye. During this video, I am focusing on cataract surgery. Taking Flomax (tamsulosin) EVEN ONCE has been associated with IFIS, where the iris constricts, billows, and prolapses during cataract surgery. This can lead to iris damage and poor visibility (which can lead to all sorts of other complications). It may also go by other brand names: Contiflo XL, Faramsil MR, Flomaxtra XL, Pamsvax XL, Tabphyn MR. The good thing is, knowing about medical history and medication history can allow the surgeon to prepare ahead of time. Though the iris is still likely to be unruly during surgery, there are things that can be done to try to control it to prevent these complications. I mention in the video that there are other medications that have been associated with IFIS. I must emphasize that these medications lead to IFIS much less often and cases are usually more mild if they do occur. Also note that new medications and brand names are likely to be developed, so this list may not be complete. Here's the list: Alfuzosin (brand: Uroxatrol) Doxazosin (brands: Cardura, Doxadura, Larbex, Raporsin, Slocin) Prazosin (brand: Minipress) Terazosin (brand: Hytrin) Silodoson (brands: Rapaflo and Urorec) Naftopidil (brand: Flivas) Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens)-herbal BPH remedy Finasteride-for hair loss Angiotensin II receptor inhibitors (e.g. losartan) Benzodiazepines Donepezil Duloxetine Antipsychotics (quetiapine, chlorpromazine, zuclopenthixol, aripiprazole, risperidone).
