Guidance and support for people looking for work. This video will show you how to search for work. So how do employers recruit in today’s world? There are many ways to search for work. Let’s explore some of those options. Social media. You can use social media to search for work. This includes Linkedin, X (which was formerly Twitter), Facebook and Instagram. Using social media can greatly improve your chances of finding a new job. If you have an X account, follow our local X pages. They provide valuable job hunting tips, opportunities and job listings. To find DWP’s X account, along with our other social media accounts, go to gov.uk and search for ‘dwp official social media accounts’. Linkedin. LinkedIn is a business and employment focussed networking platform. Creating a LinkedIn profile, allows you to connect with employers who advertise a broad range of jobs and is a great way to get your CV out there. Find a job. Find a Job is the government’s online job search website. It’s a good starting point when looking for employment. You can do many useful things on the Find a Job website. First, you can set up email alerts for new job vacancies. Second, you can upload your CV. The site also lets you view your past job searches and applications. It’s designed to be very user friendly. If you have a disability or health condition, you can filter your job search. This will focus on employers who are registered with the Disability Confident scheme. They are committed to hiring people with disabilities or health conditions. Take a look at our short video on YouTube which will show you how to use the site. It’s a similar setup to most of the other job finding websites out there. You can watch the video by going to YouTube and searching for ‘find a job service - job search’. You can access Find a Job at gov.uk/find-a-job. Company websites. Some employers post job openings on their company websites. Others let you set up job alerts. This way, you get notified when new positions are available. Online jobsites. Many job search websites let you find and save jobs. You can bookmark them in your favourites toolbar. They give you access to current job opportunities in the labour market. Recruitment agencies. Recruitment agencies offer part-time and full-time jobs, along with permanent and temporary positions. Some employers only use recruitment agencies to post their vacancies. The Recruitment Employment Confederation is a trade body, amongst others, that has a number of agencies that are members. To find approved agencies for the type of work you are interested in, visit rec.uk.com. Press adverts, newspapers and trade journals. Some employers still use newspapers and trade journals to advertise jobs. Be aware of your local news publications and trade journals specific to the type of work you are looking for. Note that some of these may now be online. Speculative approaches. You can approach an employer directly with your CV and a cover letter even if they aren’t advertising. Make sure your CV is up-to-date and tailored to any job you apply for. Don’t forget to focus on your transferable skills. These are abilities useful to employers in many jobs and industries. They include adaptability, organisation, and teamwork. These qualities are what employers look for in strong candidates. Friends and family. Friends and family can also help you to find job opportunities. So, make sure they know your situation. Networking. Sometimes it’s about who you know. Make sure you’re exploring all avenues available when it comes to networking from word of mouth to online connections. Moving on to self-employment. For some people this is an opportunity to explore the option of becoming self-employed. It might be that you have been doing something in your spare time and now want to explore the possibility of making this your future career. We work with a number of organisations that can provide the right support and guidance for anyone considering this as an option. Find out more by going to gov.uk/working-for-yourself. This will bring up lots of information from DWP, HMRC and other agencies about becoming self-employed.
