Over the past 15 years, SAN has represented Christianity in one of the largest ever Christian Islam debate (Hyderabad), with one of the largest Islamic denominations (Chennai) and responded to the various allegations by the opponents of Christianity in numerous public programs across India. Over the years, in our studies and interaction with secular academics we have realized that almost all histographies about modern Indian history have ignored the enormous work done by Christian missionaries in building our nation, India. It could have been due to the ideological framework (where missionary work didn’t fit as in the case of Marxist historians), or due to their extensive reliance on colonial government records (e.g. Cambridge Historians) ignoring other type of records, or even just bias (as in the case of many nationalist historians). Irrespective of the reasons, the damage caused by this exclusion has been collateral across all spectrum of society including church. Christians, Christian institutions and missionaries have been considered as inconsequential or even worst as agents of colonial powers/ Western nations intending to break India (e.g. the book “Breaking India” by BJP appointed guest faculty of JNU, Rajiv Malhotra). Sadly, as Christians are also largely ignorant about the missionary contributions in society, they have also started believing that their role is limited to preaching the Gospel without intervening in the society. At this juncture, SAN decided to start conducting public programs and academic seminars in 2018. Over the last 2 years, we have conducted about 70 + programs in different parts of India. Apart from internal resource persons, we had eminent personalities from all walks of life contributing to the lectures (Justice Kurien Joseph, Former Justice of Supreme Court, James Varghese IAS, Former Additional Chief Secretary of Kerala, Rev Valson Thambu, Former Principal of St Stephen’s College, Delhi, Prof. Dr. SM Michael, Director of Institute of Indian Culture under Mumbai University who is also a consultant to the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Inter- Religious Dialogue, etc). We also have partnered with scholars from Dalit Studies who extensively use missionary records (Dr. Sanal Mohan, Director of Kerala Council of Historical Research). We give all the glory to God that several of these seminars and subsequent follow up have not only energized many missionaries and Christians but also have contributed governments taking note (declaring some of the missionary houses as historical monuments) and secular publications taking keen interest in publishing books on missionary contributions.
