I took a 1-night, 2-day solo trip from central Tokyo to Kusatsu Onsen, traveling directly by highway bus from the Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal. After a comfortable ~4-hour ride with a rest stop, I arrived at Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal. First, I admired the iconic Yubatake steam field, then wandered to my favorite kaku-uchi sake bar where you can sample around 20 varieties of Gunma sake. At 3 PM I checked in to a ryokan featuring five private baths (one under repair), all 100% free-flowing from the source—and free to use anytime when available. The water quality was superb. Dinner was served in-room: a hearty course centered on Jōshū beef sukiyaki (the local Gunma brand), along with seasonal sides. After dinner, I soaked in the onsen once more, then strolled to see the Yubatake light-up, which was truly atmospheric. The next morning began with an early bath, followed by an in-room Japanese breakfast. I enjoyed one final soak before check-out. The rate of around ¥15,000 with this level of hospitality felt like an incredible bargain. With time before my return bus, I visited another local kaku-uchi sake shop to savor more Gunma sake and even picked up two 4-go bottles as souvenirs. Finally, I hopped back on the bus to Shinjuku. Kusatsu Onsen is easily accessible via direct bus from Shinjuku, making it perfect for a quick solo getaway. If you want an affordable onsen stay with private baths and to enjoy Gunma’s local sake, I hope this guide helps you plan your trip! #JapanSoloTravel #KusatsuOnsen #GunmaSake #PrivateOnsen #Yubatake #BusTrip #Sukiyaki #SoloTravelJapan
