Shocking Discovery: Grave Found Trapped Between Air Conditioners + Lost Cemetery & 100's Of Graves

In this next installment of the Cecil Documentary, we’re back in Sumter County, Georgia—following Cecil on his mission to locate and document every cemetery in the county. Armed with a list of 139 burial grounds, Cecil is uncovering graves that have been forgotten, overlooked, or buried by time. On this video, we visit three drastically different sites. At one stop, we explore a church cemetery that has literally been built around. The church structure was extended all the way up to the headstones—some of which now sit directly beside the building's foundation. One grave is even wedged between two air conditioning units—an eerie symbol of how easily the past is paved over. But it’s the last location that stands out most: an African American cemetery hidden in the woods. On the surface, it appears abandoned. Yet, beneath the overgrowth, we find hundreds of graves—including some from as recently as 2024. These cemeteries are often left off official surveys and forgotten, but we’re working to change that—by adding them back to the list and making sure they’re never ignored again. This is the work that doesn’t always get seen—but it’s just as important as any headstone restoration or big discovery. It’s about making sure every person, every burial, every story is counted. And this is only part two of our all-day journey—where we documented 15 cemeteries, explored an abandoned church, and pushed down miles of rough backroads from morning till night.
