For Meditation – Javisko [blues rock, Slovakia 1970]

Slovak band “For Meditation” with its leader Jozef Barina became despite of their short career the main inventors of the modern rock music in Czechoslovakia. (Illegal) beginnings of Slovak rock were very uncertain. It took 5 years for the rock music to became silently accepted by the communist establishment and after next 5 years rock found itself again banned as a “unwanted” expression of the “baneful freedom”. Few years between created the best of the Czechoslovak 60´s rock music (or as it is called in Czechoslovakia – big-beat music). Jozef (Jožo) Barina started with rock music in 1963 as 15-years old, gone through bands “Kométa” and “The Players” and in 1967 started his third formation “For Meditation” (also “Meditating Four”). This band was influended by the black music – funk, blues and psych rock. Their music was built on the original works written by Jozef Barina. No doubt he was (with Dežo Ursiny) the most distinctive rock author, who created the strong basis of the later Slovak rock music. “For Meditation” was banned in 1970 (officially because of their lyrics), disbanded and Jozef Barina ended his music career. Only one 7-inch vinyl with their 2 songs was released in 1969. Luckily, in 2018 was other their recordings from the archive of the Slovak radio released on the limited-edition vinyl only. There we can find previously unreleased pieces such as this one – an interesting blues rock piece with personal lyrics about the stage. There are still some copies on stock.
