They provide many things to help us live. Plants give us the following: Oxygen Plants give off oxygen as they make their food through photosynthesis. Oxygen is the air we breathe. Without oxygen, people and animals will die. Food The fruits and vegetables that we eat come from plants. These food make people and animals healthy and strong. Building materials Some of the materials that we use to build houses, furniture, and other things come from trees. Oak, pine, coconut, and bamboo are sources of wood to make houses. Molave, kamagong, mahogany, narra, yakal, rattan, and bamboo are good sources of wood for furniture such as chairs, tables, cabinets, and beds. Materials for making clothes, bags, shoes, paper, and other useful things The fiber of some plants are good clothing materials. Cotton, flax, hemp, ramie, and pineapple are used as to make clothes. Abaca and rattan plants are sources of materials used to make bags, baskets, and other decorations. Abaca is also used to make slippers and shoes. Rubber trees are sources of materials to make shoe soles, car tires, rubber gloves, and toys. Paper also comes from trees such as bamboo, pine, and birch. Ingredients for medicine: Some plants can be used as medicine or as ingredients to relieve some symptoms of an illness. Guava leaves can be used as disinfectants for our wounds. Lagundi and oregano leaves are used to help relieve coughs. Ginger root helps relieve sore throat. Protection from soil erosion and flooding: The roots of trees help prevent soil erosion and flooding. Their roots hold the soil firmly so that they will not be washed away by heavy rain. Tree roots also absorb and keep more water. This prevents flooding. Shade: Plants such as acacia, mahogany, and Talisay provide us shade to keep us cool and to shield us from the sun’s heat. Beautiful surroundings: Plants help make our surroundings beautiful. Palm trees, Chinese bamboo, orchids, cacti and succulents, and flowering plants make our homes beautiful.
