Heavy Freight and Goods Trains were the theme for the Mid Hants Railway 'Spring Steam Gala' of 2022, which was held over four days, during the Bank Holiday Weekend of the 29th April - 2nd May. The line up would consist of a quintuplet of locomotives, with four of them being commonly used for goods transportation, during the days of steam. Two engines made up the guest list, with both being 2-8-0 locomotives that were specifically designed and built for heavy freight on their respective regions. The first visitor was LMS 8F No. 48305, arriving from the Great Central Railway. Following a heavy overhaul at Loughborough, the loco returned to traffic in 2019. The second guest arrived in the shape of GWR 2800 No. 2857, courtesy of the Severn Valley Railway and the 2857 Society. This would break new ground, as this class of loco had never traversed the Watercress Line. Built in April 1918, the 104-year old loco is set to be withdrawn for overhaul in the Summer. The rest of the lineup consisted of the home fleet - LSWR S15 No. 506, SDJR 7F No. 53808 and SR Schools Class No. 30925 'Cheltenham'. The pride and joy of the Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust, the 7F has been based on the Mid Hants Railway, since arriving in the Summer of 2020. The 2-8-0's boiler certificate is set to expire at the end of 2022. Meanwhile, 506 had arrived back in Hampshire a few days before the Gala, after starring in the previous weekend's 'Spring Steam Gala' at the Severn Valley Railway. This was also the 4-6-0's first venture away from Hampshire, following the completion of its overhaul in 2019. It was also a first Gala appearance for 30925 'Cheltenham' since being turned to face Alton, which took place when the loco arrived back from the Bluebell Railway at the end of 2021. The 4-4-0 had played a starring role at the line's 'Giants of Steam' event of October 2021. Like the 7F, 'Chellie' is also set to be taken out of service later this year. The lineup for the event: Visiting: LMS 8F 2-8-0 No. 48305 (Great Central Railway) GWR 2800 2-8-0 No. 2857 (Severn Valley Railway / 2857 Society) Resident: LSWR S15 4-6-0 No. 506 SDJR 7F 2-8-0 No. 53808 SR V Schools Class 4-4-0 No. 30925 'Cheltenham' Operating alongside an intensive passenger timetable was the lovingly restored demonstration freight, hauled by 48305, 2857, 53808 and 506 during the four day event. With the challenging nature of the line, with gradients as steep as 1 in 60, the heavy freight workhorses were put to the test, as they tackled 'The Alps'. All scenes were captured on Friday 29th April, Sunday 1st May and Sunday 2nd May 2022.
