Box turtles have long been confused with tortoises and a large number of people insist on calling them tortoises. They are in fact turtles and believe it or not, they’re more closely related to pond turtles than anything else! That means they are in the Emydid family along with painted turtles and red eared sliders. Mind blowing isn’t it? I mean, how on earth are these terrestrial animals not tortoises? Well, what if we told you they aren’t all that terrestrial? Sure, they are often found on forest floors, in fields or meadows and they frequently cross road ways but they also have a deep, significant relationship with water. It’s so significant that they actually require it to stay healthy and live long lives. We’re not talking about simply drinking water either. We’re talking swimming, floating, submerging and even hibernating it it for months on end! It’s true and thanks to outdated information, many have attempted to care for these turtles without taking this into consideration. Ultimately, the lack of water in a box turtle’s environment has led to severe deformation, severe health issues and sadly, even early death. Box turtles of all kinds appreciate and use water ways of different types and although they can’t swim in overly deep places like lakes, or oceans, they sure know how to use a pond, stream or marsh, not unlike more classic aquatic species.
