SANDWICH (from the album SCHATTENSPIEL) The idea for Sandwich started literally with a ‘walk in the park’. Earlier this year, the Joe Satriani ‘Shockwave Supernova’ tour had 3 days off in Boston. One of those icy, winterly mornings, I decided to walk downtown, grabbing a cup of coffee and one of these (actually pretty decent) Dunkin’ Donuts chicken salad croissants to go. While making my way through Boston’s Public Garden, coffee in my left hand, food in my right (and accompanied by the freezing cold temperature of the season), I decided to take the first bite out of the with salad, slightly overpacked croissant. Which pretty much failed as soon half of the salad, being squeezed out of the bread, started falling onto my jacked, to the amusement of the park visitors. I couldn’t help but saying out loud, addressed to my own incapability of proper breakfast consumption: “Don’t you know how to eat a sandwich?” I instantly thought that I should make a song out of this. Just for fun sakes I typed in these words into my ‘Voice Generator’ phone app, picking a female robot voice at first. And I just loved the monotonous, creepy, robotic delivery of that sentence. So I decided to spin this idea further, picking a male robot next and turning this idea into a dialogue/argument. Basically having a married robot couple, trying to be human….. Then to musically tighten the concept, I wrote this piece mainly for acoustic/classical instrumentation, accompanied by said robotic voices/noises. And once again, Lasse Hoile did another amazing video. He just really has the talent to look inside your mind and come up with his unique style/translation. So, hope you enjoy the SANDWICH.
