Meghalaya: Four suspected Bangladeshi nationals arrested for attacking youth

Four armed suspects believed to be Bangladeshi nationals were arrested on August 9 in Meghalaya’s South West Khasi Hills following a joint search operation by locals, the Border Security Force (BSF) and the state police. The arrests came two days after a youth was attacked in Rongdangai village. According to police the suspects were caught near Khunjoy after a tip-off from a resident. When security forces and villagers approached, the suspects fled into a nearby forest. Warning shots were fired before four were apprehended. Others involved in the incident are still on the run. The case began around 1 am on August 7, when 21-year-old Balsrang A Marak, son of Habit Sangma, was asleep inside a shop in Rongdangai. A group of 8–9 armed men allegedly entered the shop and pointed a pistol at his head. They also demanded the shop owner’s phone number. The youth was then handcuffed and taken towards New Rongdangai. On the way, the attackers allegedly discussed killing him. Marak managed to loosen the cloth binding his hands and took shelter in a house, but the attackers followed, fired at the house, forced entry and beat him up. They eventually told the family to take him for medical treatment. Items recovered from the suspects include a Bangladesh Police identity card, Indian currency and Bangladeshi taka. Police are investigating possible cross-border links and the gang’s role in criminal activities.
