Learn to plant a traditional British country farm style hedge, eligible for a Countryside Stewardship grant, using bareroot plants, which are delivered when they are dormant from November to March. Native country hedges are almost always based on a backbone of "Thorn", which can mean Hawthorn or Blackthorn (sloe), with a mix of other native, deciduous trees and shrubs including hazel, wild roses, dogwood, wild privet, field maple, crab apple, spindle, and guelder rose. In the past, country hedges tended to be planted as single species (usually Hawthorn or Blackthorn, in some areas Hazel or Beech). These days, a hedge must include at least two species to qualify for a Countryside Stewardship hedge grant, can be single species (usually hawthorn or hazel) or mixed for the most wildlife value.
