Having a primary care doctor who is familiar with the needs of an LGBTQ+ patient increases the patient’s trust and allows for easier communication between the patient and provider. Benjamin Laniakea, MD (they, them), discusses the range of needs that are more easily discovered and addressed as a matter of course in a practice that specializes in LGBTQ+ care. They provide key points for the LGBTQ+ patient to communicate with their medical provider and outlines the stigma and discrimination that patients may face. Dr. Laniakea provides information on tailored sexual health including sexual practices, infections, sexual health of transfeminine/transmasculine, lesbian, men-who-have-sex-with men (MSM), and patients who are at risk of pre- and post-exposure to HIV. They elaborate on the diversity of gender affirming care, the standard femininizing/masculinizing drug regimens/surgeries, importance of social support, and legally changing documents. They talk about family planning/family building, organ-based cancer screening (breast, cervical, colon, anal, and prostate), and the importance of immunizations. Dr. Laniakea emphasizes the importance of mental health and access to care for the LGBTQ+ community. Speaker Benjamin Laniakea, MD, is a board-certified family medicine physician specializing in full-spectrum LGBTQ+ health. They are the Medical Director of Stanford’s LGBTQ+ Clinical Program and have been the theme lead for the Sex, Gender, and Sexual Function curriculum at the Stanford School of Medicine.
