The South-East Development Commission (SEDC) has proposed a ₦140 billion budget for the 2026 fiscal year focused on driving development projects across the five South-East states. The Nigerian Senate wasted no time in approving this budget proposal after defence before the Senate Committee. It however warned the commission to exercise strict fiscal discipline and ensure transparency, accountability and tangible outcomes, stressing the need to avoid misuse of funds The South East Development Commission says the budget targets strategic development areas including: Infrastructure development and renewal Economic empowerment and industrial growth Social services (education, health) Security and peace-building initiatives Environmental sustainability efforts This long-term vision is tied to transforming the South-East into a larger regional economy over the next decade. Governors of the five South-East states — Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo — have resolved to contribute N5 billion each to support the proposed N140 billion budget of the South East Development Commission (SEDC) for the 2026 fiscal year. Does this give the South-East a sense of belonging or has missed the yearning of the people of the East?
