"Old Barney" is located on the northern tip of Long Beach Island in New Jersey. The current lighthouse was built in 1859. Visitors can now climb the 217 steps for a panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean and Barnegat Bay. An earlier, less effective lighthouse had fallen into the sea due to erosion. Designed by Lieutenant George G. Meade, the tower stands 163 feet tall. An estimated 675,000 bricks were used to build the Barnegat Lighthouse. Its first-order Fresnel lens was the heart of the lighthouse's operation. The powerful light could be seen up to 19 nautical miles away, serving as a critical navigation aid. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1944 and became a state park in 1957. Thanks to preservationists, a new light was installed and "Old Barney" was re-lit on January 1, 2009. That was exactly 150 years after it was first lit. The US Coast Guard says New Jersey has 23 lighthouses. #BarnegatLighthouse #OldBarney #LBI #LongBeachIsland #NewJersey #Lighthouse #HistoricPlaces #JerseyShore #OceanCountyNJ #BarnegatBay
