Rocinha, the largest favela in southern Brazil, completely changed my perception of what a favela is. It’s bustling and vibrant, overturning the stereotypes people usually have about it. In contrast, the urban areas of Rio can feel chaotic and disorganized—so much so that thieves sometimes snatch phones in broad daylight. But there are also kind people. A middle school girl patiently translated the teacher’s words into English for me, letting me join their study tour group. At that moment, I truly felt like a little angel shone from her, like one of the angels in the monastery.
