SynthAlto 1 (2022) – live version A collaborative patchwork electroacoustic composition for viola and fixed audio track Dedicated to the people of Ukraine Слава Україні! Героям Слава! Premiered at the Old Town Hall in Gdansk (March 3, 2022), with live improvised viola part by Michał Markiewicz. Final mix, direction, mastering by Dariusz Mazurowski at the De eM Studio. This project started in January / February 2022 as a Frankenstein like experiment, with the main idea to assembly a coherent musical work from audio contributions sent by as many composers as possible. To be performed with live improvised viola part during the concert scheduled for Thursday, March 3, 2022 at the Old Town Hall in Gdansk, Poland. Dariusz asked numerous artists, residing all over the world, to contribute their audio material, without any suggestions what to offer, what kind of material etc. Only asked for files approx. 1 minute long. Finally Dariusz has received 29 audio contributions, varying from synthetic patches, physically modeled quasi string sounds, micro pieces, miniatures to pure acoustic recordings, both instrumental and field. In general these sounds are preserved in their original form, without any processing which changes the sound (tone, pitch etc.). So, how it's been made? Most sounds are mixed, layered as the whole, single files. To make a better blend with the others Dariusz sometimes alter fade in and out curves, or overall volume. In certain cases sounds are cut into slices, smaller samples and placed where it makes a musical sense. To make a coherent and dramatic piece Dariusz has adopted running order and layering methods based on similarities and contrasts. And then... Michał decided to perform this piece without rehearsals, or even listening to the tape before the concert – to be fully open minded and fresh, like a sonic tabula rasa. Thus live version contains exactly what Michał has played during the concert, direct desk recording mixed with our tape.
