Grafting cactus is when you take 2 separate cacti and stick them together ! The bottom cactus is called the rootstock , and it provides the energy thru its roots and photosynthesis for the top piece . The top peice is called the scion . Grafting cacti is done for many different reasons. In this video we take a cactus farm tour and look at grafted cacti and the purpose behind it ! Many different species of cactus can be grafted , this grafting video shows several types of cacti , mainly focusing on Trichocereus Take a walk about thru the cactus nursery with me as I attempt to explain some of the different purposes for grafting cactus ! Variegated cactus has multiple colored flesh and doesn’t photosynthesis quite as well as green cacti because it lacks chlorophyll. Grafted variegated cactus helps support it with more energy from the rootstock. Small cactus can be grafted to elevate it up off the dirt to better showcase it ! In most cases grafting cactus is done to increase size and growth rate of the Scion up top . Strange cactus such as crests grow much quicker when grafted . Grafting cacti is a great way to increase production! When starting with only one piece of a particular cultivar , you are able to cut it into multiple pieces and each of these can grow and “pup” to become their own cactus ! 1 cactus cutting can easily become 10 grafts and if repeated after successful growth , those 10 can quickly become 100 ! Cut those 100 into 10 grafts and now you’ve created one thousand new cactus from your original solitary piece !! I hope you enjoy this full length, longform video on a simple explanation of grafting , please comment any suggestions for my next video !!
