America is facing a long-overdue reckoning with the problem of police violence, as many call for police reform or defunding the police. In her new book, “Becoming Abolitionists: Police, Protests, and the Pursuit of Freedom,” author Derecka Purnell chronicles her own journey towards embracing the politics of police abolition. It goes through the history of slavery and imperialism, and then takes the reader back home to St. Louis to her own family and comrades. She writes about the intersections of issues, typically left out of abolition conversations, and why they must be included in our vision for 21st century abolition. Purnell joins Marc Lamont Hill on “Black News Tonight” to discuss why abolition is important.
