Fail Safe is 1964 film by Sidney Lumet, based on the 1962 novel of the same name by Eugene Burdick and Harvey Wheeler. Screenplay by Walter Bernstein and Peter George. Cinematography by Gerald Hirschfeld. Starring Henry Fonda, Dan O'Herlihy, Walter Matthau, Frank Overton, Fritz Weaver, Edward Binns, Larry Hagman, ... Cold war, a technical malfunction on some American nuclear bombers sends them to launch an attack on Moscow. The US president (Henry Fonda) therefore attempts to communicate with his Russian counterpart to avoid nuclear war at all costs. Time passes and the bombers are still isolated and en route to Moscow. They manage to shoot down some of them but two are still in flight and closer to the Russian capital. At this point the US president finds a dramatic solution to avoid the nuclear apocalypse if the bombers succeed in their target. Communicating with the Soviet leader they decide that if Moscow is destroyed then the president will command other US bombers to destroy New York, thus breaking the chain of retaliation. A city for a city to save Humanity, but at what cost? The last thirty seconds of the film are truly special.
