Once considered a luxury shopping destination on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, Chicago Place Mall opened in 1990 with Saks Fifth Avenue as its crown jewel. Inside its sleek glass-and-steel design were high-end shops, restaurants, and eight stories of vertical retail meant to redefine the city’s shopping scene. But despite the prime location, Chicago Place struggled against changing trends and fierce competition. By the late 2000s, most of the mall was empty, and when Saks closed in 2012, it signaled the end of an era. Today, much of the building sits vacant or converted to offices yet if you look closely, traces of the original mall remain hidden inside.
