I was not surprised to see so many tourists also because it’s a very autochthonous (local) tourism. It’s something that is not tidied up for tourists, you visit an autochthonous Brazil, not tidied up to show something superficial for tourists, it is what it is.” 16. Aerial shot of Rocinha favela ++MUTE++ STORYLINE: Rio de Janeiro saw a record 2.1 million international tourists in 2025, as tourism spread beyond traditional landmarks to places like Rocinha, boosting local businesses and challenging old stereotypes, offering a local point of view of Brazil's most populated favela. According to Rio’s City Hall, 2025 saw a 44.8% increase in the number of international tourists, generating 7.8 billion reais ($1.5 billion) for Rio’s economy. Helped by viral social media videos, many tourists now want to visit the enormous Rocinha favela, an area that not long ago was seen as a no-go for outsiders due to violence and crime. “To come to Rio and only visit Copacabana Beach, the statue of Christ and Sugar Loaf, you’re not really visiting Rio. You’re visiting a posh and expensive side of Rio. But Rio’s essence comes from the favelas,” Vitor Oliveira, a local guide, told the AP. Oliveira, who used to work in construction and as a local music producer, started offering tours after years working as a mototaxi driver in Rocinha and noticing an increase in international visitors. Tourism has since become his main source of income. He saw an explosion of tourists in 2025, especially near New Year’s Eve. “From 8 a.m. until 10 p.m., the favela was packed with tourists. It was surreal,” he said. Tours normally start by visiting scenic viewpoints, as Rocinha is located on a hill that overlooks most major landmarks in Rio’s south side, including the statue of Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf, Leblon and São Conrado beaches, and the Pedra da Gavea mountain.
