Paul asked Timothy to remain in Ephesus. Before leaving to minister in northern Greece, Paul had instructed him to continue providing leadership in that city because he knew the churches lacked mature leaders, and there were false teachers waiting for a chance to spread their twisted ideas. The congregation had experienced much growth but had not yet developed leaders mature enough to refute sophisticated forms of false doctrine or resolve serious disputes between members. So there was still much work to be done in selecting and training "overseers" and "deacons." Timothy's first assignment was to correct or discipline the false teachers.
