Matt Rutherford is the first person in history to complete a non-stop, single-handed, voyage around North and South America. Rutherford left Annapolis, MD on June 2011 and traversed some of the most dangerous seas on Earth. During the first leg of his trek, Rutherford broke a record by solo sailing the smallest boat in history through the Northwest Passage. Once through this northern passage, Rutherford sailed around the entire state of Alaska then south through the Pacific Ocean from North to South America to make his left-hand turn at storm-tossed Cape Horn and completing his record-breaking journey in 309 days after sailing 27,077 non-stop miles at sea. Since finishing the circumnavigation of the Americas, Matt Rutherford has created Ocean Research Project, an organization dedicated to science, education and exploration. In 2013 Matt spent 70 days in the Atlantic ocean mapping out the unexplored eastern side of the Atlantic Garbage Patch. In 2014 he sailed from San Francisco to Yokohama Japan 6,800 miles non-stop collecting plastics samples to better understand the plastisphere, a microbial layer of bacteria hitchhiking on the plastic. In 2015, 2016 and 2018 Matt’s organization worked primarily with NASA’s Ocean Melting Greenland program mapping out uncharted regions in Northwest Greenland. In 2021 Matt sailed back to Greenland on his new research vessel to continue their climate research.
