Gearology: The Battle Belt: • Gearology: The Battle Belt Gearology: The Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) First and foremost, for actual medical advice on how to treat wounds and what gear and/or equipment to do it with, please consult a medical professional. Any and all opinions expressed should not be treated as actual medical advice but only as a demonstration of one individual's methods and chosen equipment. Seek professional training and/or advice from medical professionals for any medical needs. This piece of equipment is a medical kit worn/carried by an individual with the purpose of treating traumatic wounds immediately when they happen. The kit is an extremely basic but important assortment of medical supplies that are invaluable when seconds count. The IFAK is only the first step in a successful three-layer approach to combat/traumatic medical aid. This layered system goes as follows: Level 1 = The IFAK Level 2 = The CLS (Combat Life Saver) bag and trained medic Level 3 = Hospital/surgery The goal is to keep the wounded man alive long enough to pass him off to the next level. When the wounds are inflicted, the individual or his buddies will rip open his IFAK and start using the equipment to stop the bleeding, cover wounds, and patch him up to pass him off to Level 2. With the capabilities of Level 2 CLS equipment and training, the wounded man is treated and IVs, fluids, and meds can be administered. From there, the man is taken out of the situation via vehicle to attain Level 3, which is treatment at a hospital. Ideally, all of this happens within or less than one hour from the initial infliction of the wounds -we call this the "golden hour." If the wounded man can be sustained and brought to Level 3 within the golden hour, his chances of survival are much better than if he makes it to Level 3 care after the golden hour has expired. CONTENTS: Each kit is different and may change depending on what direct uses or individual unit-based SOPs are established, but generally a good IFAK will follow the same basic format. The contents of my kit are as follows: Stopping the bleeding: -Quick Clot powder -TK4 tourniquet -Israeli bandage tourniquet feature if needed Packing and covering the wound: -Israeli bandage -H&H gauze (x2) -ABD Pads (x2) Chest and Breathing -Hyfin chest seals (x2) -14 gauge, 3.25" decompression needle -Nasal Trumpet w/ lube -Ghetto MRE beverage bag chest seal Misc -Medical tape -Mph tape -MRE beverage bag -Nitrile gloves (x1, although more is better) -Alcohol cleaning wipes -Sharpie Whether you're hiking, camping, prepping, hunting, or LE/Military -having and knowing how to use an IFAK could be the difference between life and death. The IFAK is the first layer of medical aid we can tap into to immediately address severe life-threatening wounds. It gets the ball rolling on treating your wounds and allows you to patch yourself up in order to pass yourself off to the next level of care.
