This session connects lipid transport to energy balance, hormone signaling, and cardiovascular risk. We begin with chylomicrons, which carry dietary triglycerides and cholesterol from the intestines to peripheral tissues. From there, we move into VLDL, produced by the liver to distribute endogenous triglycerides. As VLDL loses triglycerides through lipoprotein lipase, it is converted into IDL and eventually LDL, the primary cholesterol carrier to peripheral tissues. The lecture highlights how LDL receptors, apoB-100, and hepatic uptake play a critical role in cholesterol homeostasis and how disruptions in this process contribute to atherosclerosis. You’ll also learn about HDL and its role in reverse cholesterol transport, moving excess cholesterol from peripheral tissues back to the liver. We review the functions of key apolipoproteins—apoA-I, apoB-48, apoB-100, apoC-II, and apoE—and how they coordinate lipoprotein maturation, enzyme activation, and receptor recognition.
