Hong Kong elections: 153 hopefuls vying for 90 seats, first time every constituency being contested

A total of 153 candidates will vie for 90 seats in Hong Kong's Legislative Council election on Dec 19. The government has said it will be a competitive race, with every constituency being contested for the first time. 35 candidates are campaigning for 20 seats -- the only ones the public gets to vote for. All the candidates have passed a new vetting process by a government-led panel. There are no contenders from major opposition parties as most have decided to boycott the polls. Many leading pro-democracy figures have either been jailed, banned from running, or have fled the territory.
