How To Propagate Grape Vines, Taking Grape Vine Cuttings, Grape Vine Propagation After a bit of research and shopping about, a few years back, I got a grape vine (Vitis Phoenix). Now the vine has matured a little it now consistently produces a few kilograms of fruit each year and the fruits have a great flavour to them. The fruit is so nice that when my friend got his small holding he wanted some of the same grapes. And so it began, last year with me taking my first serious batch of cuttings to send to sunny Wales!! Now how do I take my cuttings? Taking cuttings of grape vines in the morning to ensure the plant stems are well hydrated, for a better success rate. You need to use semi-ripe or ripened wood for cutting material, that means using the stems that have a little flexibility to them but that are not springy. The stems will be green/brown in colour for semi-ripe wood or a darkened brown colour for ripe wood. Tools required: Clean sharp secateurs or knife, Suitably sized pot, Hormone rooting compound, Soil based compost or plant straight into the ground, Cut stems just below a leaf joint and strip all the leaves. Do not use sections that are thinner than pencil thickness. Dip the bottom of the cuttings into hormone rooting compound If you have some. Make a small hole in the compost. Insert the cuttings into the soil/compost mix and firm around the stems to ensure there are no air pockets, and that there is good contact between cutting stems and the compost. Alternatively, as I do, plant the cuttings directly into the ground. Wait until roots have formed. The stems will stay dormant over winter but do not let them dry out or get too wet. Once the plants have established a good root structure, with roots visible to the base of the pot, then the plants can be potted up Into a larger sized pot or container. Taking the cuttings in the Autumn will mean that you will have to wait until the following spring or summer for the new plants to be viable.
