(31 May 1996) English/Nat America's Jewish community - the biggest outside Israel - was also digesting the election results giving Benjamin Netanyahu a victory over Shimon Peres. The overwhelming feeling amongst Hasidic Jews in New York was of support for the new Prime Minister, and the hope that he'll be tougher on Israel's Arab neighbours. The residents of Crown Heights in New York, seem to believe that Netanyahu will take the peace process forward more cautiously than Shimon Peres. APTV spoke to orthodox Hasidic jews, who said Peres was not religious enough and had given too much away in the peace process without asking enough in return. SOUNDBITE: (English) I'm happy that this election has come out like this. I hope this prime minister is going to be better. SUPER CAPTION: VOXPOP SOUNDBITE: (English) Bibi Netanyahu is for the peace and it's good for the citizens of Israel. I was born in Jerusalem in Israel and I know my children are afraid to go to Israel because they know what's going on with the bombs and the terrorists and all these things. He is good for the peace and for the citizens of Israel. SUPER CAPTION: VOXPOP SOUNDBITE: (English) Well of course, nothing is for sure, but it's the only possibility. It's like anything but Clinton, anything but Peres. It's you know, it's the lesser of two evils. SUPER CAPTION: VOXPOP SOUNDBITE: (English) Because I really dislike Mr Peres personally, that's one thing. And another thing, I think nobody is giving away land for free to nobody ever. SUPER CAPTION: VOXPOP SOUNDBITE: (English) I feel that it was a especially sweet victory, especially since the initial results seemed to indicate that Peres had eked out a narrow victory and the reversal was dramatic and beautiful. Victory is sweet. SUPER CAPTION: VOXPOP SOUNDBITE: (English) I think that the best thing for Israel would be for Mr Netanyahu to become prime minister because I think that any prime minister who is going to negotiate a peace treaty with the Arabs has to negotiate from a position of strength and I feel that although Mr Peres was very admirable in his attempts to reconcile the differences between the Palestinians and the other Arabs in the region, he did so from a position of weakness.
