Welcome to my patch of Narrowleaf Milkweed! This is a variety native to our area, and it can be tough to grow but so worth it. Let's talk about pests: the good and the bad. https://sandiegoseedcompany.com/produ... 0:29 Intro We started this milkweed back around March, and it's been a labor of love. They were growing so slowly, and we were as careful as could be when we transplanted them out into the farm. The narrowleaf variety is native to the west coast of North America, and it's the sole food source (and early habitat) for monarch butterflies. It's a great flower, and it attracts tons of pollinators as well as some not so "desirable" pests like aphids. 1:20 Aphid Infestation If you're growing milkweed, you're more than likely going to see aphids since they flock all over it. But before you bust out the blowtorch, take a second to cool off. Harming the insects or plants means that's going to mean less habitat for monarchs, so you want to weigh your options. For me, it's a no-brainer to leave the aphids on the milkweed. We also have ladybugs feeding on the aphids! We want to attract beneficial insects, and sometimes that means a "harmful" insect might be the attractor. We try to let nature runs its course! 4:12 What I Want You To Know A key lesson here is to be aware of what you are putting on your plants, especially when it comes to treating any kind of insects. If you target a species - even with an organic method - what effect might that have on your plants or the food chain? Any flower - even vegetables - is going to attract some kind of pollinator. Did you know mosquitoes are the main pollinator of the cacao tree? We all love bees and butterflies, but there are many other insects that help out in the garden. 5:41 3 Pollinator Tips 1. Plant tons of flowers, especially from seed so you can ensure it is pesticide-free, all over your garden 2. Have a diverse garden with flowers, veggies, fruits, etc. 3. Be wary of spraying anything in your garden, especially if you plan to eat the produce KEEP LEARNING →Want more gardening tips?
