Wrestler Said 'Size Always Wins' to Bruce Lee on Live TV — 12 Seconds Later 8 Million Gasped Los Angeles, March 1971. The Tonight Show. Live to 8 million households. Professional wrestler 'Crusher' Mike Davis, 6'4" 280 pounds, NWA Western States Champion, three years undefeated, was Johnny Carson's guest. Davis had been vocal in wrestling magazines: kung fu is fake, choreography, size and strength always win. Tonight he'd prove it on national television. Carson mentioned Bruce Lee was in the audience supporting a friend. Davis looked at Bruce — 5'7", 140 pounds in a dark suit — and saw exactly what he expected. The perfect example. Davis smiled. 'Johnny, that's exactly what I'm talking about. No disrespect to Mr. Lee, but I'm 280 pounds. He's what, 130? In a real fight, there's nothing he could do. It's just physics.' The studio went quiet. Davis looked at Bruce. 'Mr. Lee, if you want to come up here, I'll show America what really happens when size meets technique.' Bruce stood. Walked onto stage. Davis: 'This is going to go one way.' Bruce: 'Attack me. Full commitment. Show America what you said would happen.' 12 seconds. Second 4-6: Davis grabbed Bruce's arm, iron grip, Bruce touched Davis's elbow, grip released involuntarily. Second 7-9: Davis shot for legs, Bruce redirected, swept planted leg. Second 10-12: Davis came with real aggression, Bruce moved inside, palm to solar plexus, Davis's air exited completely, diaphragm spasmed, he went down gasping. Bruce knelt beside him: 'Breathe slowly. Your diaphragm will reset in thirty seconds.' During commercial Davis apologized. They came back live. Davis to camera: 'I called Mr. Lee a skinny actor. Said martial arts were fake. I was wrong. Completely wrong.' The clip was replayed everywhere. Davis never dismissed martial arts again. Started training himself. Bruce's career changed. Casting directors called. Martial arts schools across America saw enrollment explode. The twelve seconds became famous. Fifty years later, still famous.
