One of the all-time classic non-piano-based jazz trios, Motian, Frisell and Lovano played together from 1984 until Motian's death in 2011. I saw this band several times in the 1980s and it was a spiritual experience each time. Motian was a one-of-a-kind drummer, and an impressive composer as well.
