On April 7, 2025, Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress visited Iwo Jima, a fierce battlefield of the Pacific War, to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the war. At this site, where approximately 22,000 former Japanese soldiers lost their lives, Their Majesties offered flowers at the memorial and offered water, among other deep prayers. They also visited several locations to pay tribute to the former islanders caught up in the war, as well as all Japanese and American war dead. During their talks with the bereaved families and the grandchildren of former islanders, it was impressive to see them quietly listening to each other's thoughts.
