Even though the .40 S&W cartridge was introduced only in 1990, some folks are already declaring it obsolete - even though every major ammunition manufacturer offers .40 Smith & Wesson loads, and every major pistol maker offers a gun chambered for it. What's the real story? Sounds like we need to call in Brownells Gun Techs™ Caleb and Steve to get to the bottom of this! Terminal ballistics of handgun cartridges have improved a lot in the last 30 years. The 9mm Luger (9x19mm), once thought a little lightweight for law enforcement and self-defense, is a LOT more effective now. Of course, the .40 S&W's terminal ballistics have improved just as much. But do you need the "Forty" when the ol' "9 Mil" gets the job done more than adequately? Caleb points out that the Nine and the Forty are likely equally effective against a single attacker. But the 9mm's lighter recoil means you can recover and transition between multiple targets faster. So "recoil management" is less of a worry with 9mm Luger AND you get more rounds in the same-size magazine as a .40 S&W. However, the .40 S&W is a very accurate cartridge, and the 9mm's advantages over it work just as much in the 40's favor over the venerable .45 ACP. Also, because it is less popular, you can find .40 S&W during ammo shortages (remember 2020-21?) long after all the 9mm is out of stock. So don't stick a fork in the .40 S&W 'cuz it ain't done yet. Myth BUSTED.
