The Yagyopavit Sanskaar (also known as Janeu Sanskar or Upanayana) is one of the most sacred of the 16 Sanskaars in Hinduism, marking a child's initiation into formal education and spiritual life. Core Significance Dwijatva (Twice Born): This ceremony represents a spiritual rebirth. The first birth is physical (from the parents), and the second is spiritual (through the Guru and knowledge). Authority for Vedas: It officially grants the individual the right to study the Vedas and perform sacred rituals. The Three Strands: The sacred thread (Janeu) consists of three strands, which carry multiple symbolic meanings: The Three Debts (Rina): Debt to ancestors (Pitra), Guru, and Sages/Saints (Rishi). The Trinity: Representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The Three Qualities: Symbolizing knowledge (Dnyan), devotion (Bhakti), and action (Karma). Gayatri Mantra: During the ceremony, the child is initiated into the Gayatri Mantra, considered the essence of spiritual wisdom. Rules and Practice Age: Traditionally performed for Brahmin boys at age 8, Kshatriyas at 12, and Vaishyas at 16. The Brahma Granthi: The three strands are tied with a special knot called the Brahma-granthi, representing the ultimate reality. Maintenance: During Daily Acts: The thread is placed over the right ear during urination and defecation to maintain its purity. Renewal: The Janeu should be changed if it breaks, during a birth or death in the family (Sutak), or periodically every four months. Marital Status: A bachelor wears one Janeu (three strands), while a married man typically wears two (six strands), one for himself and one for his wife
