The monument was built by Emperor Haile Selassie in 1930 during his coronation but removed during the Italian administration in 1936, and was restored in 1949 with decorations. The monument depicts the Ethiopian Lion of Judah at the top. Menelik II Square is a historic of Ethiopia, featuring an iconic equestrian statue of Emperor Menelik II. Erected in 1930 by Emperor Haile Selassie to commemorate the 1896 victory at the Battle of Adwa, it sits near St. George Cathedral and ADWA victory museum and is a key city reference. ADWA, globally renowned as the site of the 1896 Battle of Adwa, where Ethiopian forces decisively defeated Italian invaders to maintain independence. Fought on March 1, 1896, Ethiopian Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taytu Betul led soldiers, farmers, and regional forces to defeat Italy.
