What a champion he was. Montjeu follows up success in the French Derby with a second effortless success, belying fears as to how he would handle the travel to Ireland. On paper, the three-year-old’s principal rivals appeared to be the British paid, Daliapour and Beat All, second and third at Epsom. But the mercurial Cash Asmussen was always going oh so sweetly aboard the John Hammond-trained winner - crowned champion three-year-old that season after winning the Arc - and he surged to the front to deny Daliapour and Gerald Mosse. ”I guess it was wise to ride him to quicken because he can really quicken,” Asmussen said afterwards. ”When I rolled besides Frankie [Dettori, who rode fifth-placed Mutafaweq] he said "Oh no!".
