With a forecast of light winds and a 4000m base, so Steve set a goal at Segovia. It would have been Avila and back but we’d had problems with fires down wind of Pena Negra, and the attendant water bombing aircraft. Other than a glitch at the start where I got low at the Big-Spine, and again at the pass, getting to Avila was a breeze. It was super lifty after the pass and I didn’t get below 2500m, straight lining for kilometres at a time. All but Jack, Lukasz, Stephen B and I landed at Avila, but I was blissfully unaware as I flew over at 2700m. I always find this section tricky, and this day was no exception with some heavy sink before the windmill ridge. I decided to change my tactics from last year and push north, rather than go deep into the windmill ridge, and it paid off. Flying on that ridge was super rough last year, and frankly I’d rather land than do that again, but I found climbs to get me over the forest. I was drifting back towards airspace in the climbs however, so kept having to push north. Both to stay out of airspace, and also because the dark ominous over development to the south was rather scary. Things worked out well, with some 5m/s climbs I needed to leave to stay below 2900m, that was until just past Villacastin. Then it got sinky very sinky in fact, to the tune of nearly 4m/s until just before I was about to land in a big field. At all of 87m AGL I spotted some swifts feeding on insects and managed to work a low save up 500m higher. I thought I’d get right back up, but it wasn’t to be. In hindsight I should have pushed back up wind when I lost it at 1600m, but I opted for a downwind dash into more sink and an eventual landing 5km further East. It was a grand day out and Ester our amazing retrieve driver was waiting for me as I packed up, after 5 hours 18 mins and 97km of airtime. I love the flyPiedrahita guided XC service. When on the bus it was about a 15 minute drive to pick up Stephen Bishop , a beer stop and then Lukasz who’d made it to Segovia. He had been a naughty lad though.
