Today marks the 61st anniversary of the infamous U-2 spyplane incident, where American pilot Capt. Francis Gary Powers was shot down near Sverdlovsk (present day Yekaterinburg) while on an ambitious reconnaissance mission through the Soviet Union. The fateful flight occurred on May 1, 1960. Powers managed to survive the incident but was captured by Soviet authorities, imprisoned, and eventually convicted of espionage. One of my all-time favorite books is Operation Overflight, an account of the incident written by Powers. Upon reading the book, I wondered, "What happened to the wreckage of the U-2 spyplane?" Back in 2017, I visited the Central Museum of the Russian Armed Forces in Moscow, Russia, to find out for myself whether or not the wreckage was still there. Does anyone know the answers to the following questions - where exactly near Yekaterinburg was Powers recovered and captured? Where exactly was the wreckage of the plane found? Is there some kind of monument there? If you happen to know the answers to any of those questions, please let me know in the comments. Thanks for watching!
