Many insects feed on and breed in the leaves of gum trees. This video looks at the insects which create sugary lerps on gum leaves. The insects are known as psyllids (pronounced with a silent 'p') of the family Psyllidae. Psyllids are sap-suckers and they suck sap from gum tree leaves, and excrete the excess plant sugars as honeydew. This is visible as a shiny sticky substance on gum tree leaves. Psyllid infestation can cause leaves to show necrosis, and heavy infestations may cause defoliation of trees. Naturally occurring parasites and predators will eventually get on top of a serious psyllid infestation, but that doesn't happen overseas where the parasites do not occur naturally.
