(19 Mar 1996) Mandarin/Nat A prominent Chinese dissident says she doesn't believe Beijing plans to invade Taiwan. Chai Ling, a well-known activist who took part in the Tiananmen Square demonstrations, is in Taiwan to observe the Presidential election. Former student leader Chai Ling is in Taiwan at the invitation of the World League for Freedom and Democracy. She was smuggled out of China after the Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989 and now lives in exile in the United States. Chai claims China's military exercises near Taiwan are intended to influence the Taiwanese presidential election. She says Beijing's sabre rattling underscores the internal conflicts among China's leadership and the shaky position of its President, Jiang Zemin. Chai also said she believed China would not invade Taiwan. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) "The peaceful revolution that has been going on in Taiwan actually serves as a very strong fight back to Beijing's totalitarian rule. In Taiwan the government handed over power but it did not fall apart and instead the society became more peaceful, prosperous and stable. And I think this is a very good example for people on the mainland, for democracy." SUPER CAPTION: Chai Ling, Chinese Dissident Chai Ling was speaking while attending a meeting at Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council in the centre of Taipei today. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) "A survey conducted in Beijing showed that 80 percent of those interviewed - even though they are for re-unification - don't want a war." SUPER CAPTION: Li Wei Lian, Taiwan's spokesperson for Mainland Affairs Chai says Taiwan's democracy serves as a model for mainland China and could help to encourage Beijing on the road to democracy.
