Klein Bonaire and snorkeling Klein Bonaire is a relatively small and uninhabited island of 6 km² off the coast of Bonaire. It is located right in front of the capital Kralendijk at a distance of about 800 meters. The island is completely flat and only overgrown with small shrubs and different types of cacti. With the beginning of diving tourism on the island, project developers wanted to build recreational resorts on Klein Bonaire. Dive operators on the island, together with some conservationists, have managed to prevent this and now Klein Bonaire is a protected area; it is part of the Bonaire National Marine Park. Since 2006, work has been underway on the reforestation of the island; including the planting of native trees including the sea grape, beach poplar, braziel tree, knippa and the rare bonaire palm. Washington Slagbaai National Park Bonaire The Washington Slagbaai National Park is a national park on Bonaire in the Caribbean Netherlands. It is an amalgamation of the Washington and Slagbaai parks and covers 5643 hectares. This makes it the largest National Park in the Caribbean Netherlands. The park is located in the northwest of Bonaire. The area consists of sand dunes, beach, mangrove, saliña (salt lakes and coves of dead coral) and forest. The saliñas Slagbaai and Goto were also designated as an internationally protected area at the Ramsar Convention in 1971. The rock formation continues into the sea. The management is in the hands of the Bonaire National Parks Foundation (STINAPA), which also manages the Bonaire National Marine Park. The highest mountain on the island, the Brandaris with a height of 241 meters, is located in the middle of the park. Washington Park became the first national park in the Netherlands Antilles on December 7, 1968 and covered the area of a former plantation of this name. It had been owned by Julio C. van der Ree (known as Boy Herrera) since 1947[1][2] The area of the smaller plantation Brazil was also purchased by the government. In 1979, the area of the former plantation Slagbaai, including Lake Goto, was purchased, which forms the connection between Washington and Brasiel. The name Slagbaai comes from 'slaughter bay', the bay from which slaughtered goats were exported. In 1982, Washington and Slagbaai parks were merged into Washington Slagbaai National Park.
