Welcome to A-Z History! In 1947, the British cabinet decided to hand over the problem of Palestine to the United Nations, as both Arabs and Jews had rejected compromise proposals. This decision was met with concern from military chiefs. Britain felt that it had offered reasonable solutions, but the US had undermined their efforts. Britain announced that it would not recommend a particular solution to the UN. While Arabs were open to UN involvement, Zionists were initially hesitant. The incident with the ship "Exodus," carrying Jewish refugees, where the passengers were forcibly disembarked by the British in Hamburg, became a major propaganda win for the Zionists. This event, and others, further highlighted British insensitivity and negatively impacted British efforts in the region. The "Exodus" incident also influenced the UN Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP). Members of the committee were shaken by their observations, and their views were further influenced by testimony from an American cleric who had been aboard the Exodus. Following UNSCOP recommendations, the UN Ad Hoc Committee on Palestine worked to formulate a resolution for the General Assembly. Both sides launched lobbying efforts, including the Zionists, who strategically assigned diplomats to engage with different UN delegations. Despite mood swings, Zionist support grew after the US and Soviet Union supported the majority recommendations.
