I have just started focusing on squidding last month. After myriads of expensive lessons from losing squid jigs, I have found the EASIEST way of catching squid for noobs like myself. If I can catch it, you can too!! Note: TL;DR is at the bottom. Rig: 1.) Learn how to tie paternoster rig using 15-20lbs monofilament. I use 30lb because I'm too cheap to buy different lbs lines and I lost too many jigs. I lost jigs so you don't have to after reading this. 2.) If you're fishing off the rocks or on a boat in deeper water, you can go bigger sizes. Big squid, big jig. Common sense. I primarily fish landbased. Wharf hopping. Shallower water depth so I use size 1.5 jigs. Colour: Natural colour seems to work best for me. However, some people swear by pink or orange. Whatever floats your boats, I guess Technique: Step 1: Cast, let it sink to bottom, then slow retrieve. Step 2: There's no step 2 No need for jerky jerk motion. Just slow retrieve. Slooooooooww. If you're feeling fancy, jerk occasionally to show off to the fishos nearby that you know your shitzz and got some mad squidding skillzz. I don't because I repeat: there's no need for it.
